University life is like the turning point in every students’ life. Most of them start to live on their own and far away from their family. They start to learn on how to face the real world and live independently. At that time, students need to choose whether to live in dormitory or outside dormitory, like apartment or rented house. The data collected by Harvard University (n.d) confirmed that more than 97% of Harvard students rather live on campus than off-campus in order to expand relationships and broaden experience during their university life. I have been living in dormitory for 1.5 years and decided to leave dormitory. After that, I started to regret it. Living outside dormitory is a little bit harsh and I could not experience the things that I had experienced during my time in dormitory. Therefore, I suggest President University students to live in dormitory.
Dormitory provides students with any kinds of services. Living in dormitory usually translates into easy living because everything is provided. For example, in President University, President University Student Housing provides students with sport courts, Wi-Fi, spaces for gathering, PU mart and many others. Usually students are allowed to use the courts for playing sports. Every time there are group discussions, they can easily go to bucks to meet up. In addition, dormitory area usually used for holding some events. For instance, PresUniv Idol, Sport Olympiad of President University, and many others. Moreover, one of the things that is beneficial for dormitory students is when they want to do online shopping. They can easily get their package in the office once it has arrived.
Dormitory is safer than living in rented house. Living in dormitory is usually full of rules an regulations. One of it is regarding the alcohol and ciggarette. According to the US department of Justice, there are higher chance of around 20-25% of women will experience a raping issue and the factor is usually because of alcohol (Liberal, n.d.). Therefore, to avoid that kind of things, most dormitory are not allowing their students to bring alcohol. Moreover, most dormitory provides students with some security guards around dormitory area. Just like in President University, there are guards every where, which are in male gate, female gate, and west gate. Usually, students also not allowed to go outside and inside the dormitory area freely to avoid any kind of unwanted events. It usually happens because of low security and dormitory helps students to avoid that kind of things.
We know that a person cannot live on his/her own. That’s why as a human we need to expand our friendship. Some evidences founded in St. Mary’s College of Maryland that students who were not living in residential campus tend to struggle to find friends for studying because they were not in the residential area at late evening, when most students gather to study (Snider, 2015).
Living in dormitory will help students to expand their friendship not only with Indonesian but also International students. By living in dormitory, students are able to meet people from different nations and cultures. They also learn on how to respect others because they live in one resident for quite long time. Just like what I have experienced, most of the events are held in dormitory area. Therefore, by living in dormitory, students will be easier to attend some social events and extracurricular activities because it is located inside dormitory area, which means it is more accessible than living outside dormitory (Rinn, 2004). Some evidences founded in St. Mary’s College of Maryland that students who were not living in residential campus tend to struggle to find friends for studying because they were not in the residential area at late evening, when most students gather to study (Snider, 2015). From that evidence, we could see that as a human, we need to expand our friendship because we cannot live by our own.
However, students don’t have freedom while they are living in dormitory. For instance, most dormitory don’t allowed students to cook on their own. While, some foods provided by the dormitory usually cannot be consumed by some students. But actually it is related with the safety of the student itself, because by cooking on your own, there is a possibility of fire accident. Not only that, Students also need to follow the rules given. This might include the restrictions on how late students are able to have visitors and there is no exception whether its family or not (SFGATE, n.d.). Its kind of cruel but it is for the safety of the students also, to prevent bad things from happening.
In conclusion, dormitory is the best place to live for University students because of the reasons above. Living in dormitory is a lot easier than living outside because dormitory provides students with any kind of services, it is a lot safer, and help students to expand their friendship. Maybe, living with full of regulations are bothering you, but if its for your own safety, rules is not a matter anymore. So, what is your choice?
